Italy's premier Paolo Gentiloni will not meet Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas in Rome on Friday as he is still hospitalised after a heart procedure, sources at the prime minister's office said.

Earlier, 62-year-old Gentiloni said he was "well" after an emergency angioplasty early this week to unblock a blood vessel in his heart.

"Thanks for the affection and good wishes. The doctors and medical staff were excellent. I'm well. I'll be back at work soon," Gentiloni tweeted late on Wednesday.

He was admitted to Rome's Policlinico Gemelli hospital on Tuesday after complaining of discomfort on his return to Rome from an official visit to Paris, where he met the country's president Francois Holland.

The hospital described Gentiloni's heart operation as "a complete success". He was expected to be kept under observation until Saturday.

Abbas is due in Rome to open the new Palestinian embassy to the Holy See and is scheduled to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican on Saturday.

Gentiloni was appointed premier on 12 December to replace Matteo Renzi, who resigned after a crushing defeat on planned constitutional reforms to streamline Italy's lawmaking.
