At least nine people have died and 33 were injured in a powerful explosion in the Lakki Marwat district, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in northwest Pakistan. The Pakistani newspaper Dawn reports this two days after an attack in the same province targeted a police post, resulting in 15 officers killed. Local authorities, Dawn reports, said they believe the explosion may have been caused by a device placed on a rickshaw.

The attack has not yet been claimed. Pakistani Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, reiterated Islamabad's "strong determination" to "defeat the scourge of terrorism," Pakistani TV reports.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province borders Afghanistan, where the Taliban have been back in power since 2021. The Taliban government this morning rejected Islamabad's accusations, deemed "unfounded," after the Pakistani Foreign Ministry yesterday summoned the Afghan chargé d'affaires, denouncing that Sunday's attack "was orchestrated by terrorists living in Afghanistan."
