Italy's deputy foreign minister Marina Sereni on Monday hailed the outcome of Germany's federal election, which the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) narrowly won.

"We'll have wait to find out the make-up of Germany's next government, but some facts are clear: the sovereignists and eurosceptics have lost out while the SPD is the largest party," Serenis said.

"This is good news for (Italy's) Democratic Party (PD) and for the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (political grouping in the European Parliament)," she underlined, congratulating SPD leader Olaf Scholz.

Preliminary results gave Scholz's centre-left SPD a narrow win on Sunday over Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives who suffered their worst-ever performance in an election dominated by climate change and by differing proposals on how to tackle it.

Scholz, said on Monday he hoped to build a three-way coalition with the Greens and the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) by Christmas.

The Greens and FDP attracted the most support from the under-30s and the Greens made history with almost 15% of the vote
