Populist premier Giuseppe Conte and lower house of parliament speaker Roberto Fico were on Thursday due to meet the parents of slain researcher Giulio Regeni, whose unsolved 2016 murder has strained Italy's relations with Egypt.

Conte and Fico are slated to hold talks with Paolo and Giulio Regeni at the lower house of parliament in Rome, a statement from Conte's office said.

The Regenis last month demanded the recall of Italy's ambassador to Egypt of its alleged obstruction of their legal team in Cairo probing the gruesome torturing to death of their son. Regeni's mutilated, half-naked corpse was found on a desert highway in February 2016, nine days after he vanished from Cairo.

No one has yet been brought to trial for the murder of Regeni, a 28-year-old Cambridge University doctoral student who at the time of his disappearance was researching the politically sensitive topic of independent trade unions in Egypt.

Italian prosecutors investigating the case last November named five Egyptian National Security Agency members as suspects in Regeni’s disappearance.
