Foreign minister Luigi Di Maio on Monday lauded the result of what he called an 'historic' referendum that ratified constitutional changes to cut the number of Italy's highly paid lawmakers by one third.
"What we achieved today is an historic result. We will go back a normal parliament... with fewer privileges," said Di-Maio.
Di Maio belongs to the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement that campaigned vigorously for a yes vote in the plebiscite held on Sunday and Monday which passed with 68.96 % of voters in favour.
"Politics is sending a signal to the citizens," Di Maio stated.
Turnout in the referendum was 53.84%.
The constitutional amendment was already approved by parliament and is due to take effect in 2023 during the next national elections.
