A pig's carcass with German chancellor Angela Merkel's name written on it was left at the building site of a mosque in the eastern city of Leipzig, Germany agency DPA quoted police as saying on Thursday.
Merkel's frequent nickname amongst Germans, 'Mother Merkel' was scrawled on dead pig in red paint, DPA quoted police as saying.
Police said they have launched an investigation into the incident, which they are treating as politically motivated, DPA reported.
Merkel's decision to allow 1.1 migrants including many refugees from the Middle East into the country last year has angered Islamophobic right-wing groups.
A recent spike in attacks against migrants and refugees in Saxony, where Leipzig is located, has worried the German government.
In 2013, the severed heads of five pigs were found the site of Leipzig's planned mosque, after weeks of protests against its construction, DPA said.
