United Nations envoy to Syria Staffan De Mistura headed to Damascus on Wednesday on a final visit after resigning his post last week , a UN spokesman announced. De Mistura will spend "a couple of days" in the city holding talks with authorities to try and create a constitutional committee, said Farhan Haq.
Haq did not state which government representatives De Mistura would meet during his stay.
The 71-year-old Italian-Swedish diplomat resigned his post on 17 October after four years in the job, telling the UN Security Council this was for personal reasons.
The UN has not yet announced De Mistura's successor.
De Mistura said he intended to finish at the end of November when he is due to report to the UN Security Council on progress on the constitutional drafting committee, which the world body sees as a major step in trying to end Syria's seven-year civil war.
The conflict in Syria has left more than 350,000 people dead, devastated cities and drawn in other countries.
