Russia's 77-day-old invasion of Ukraine is an attack on the international rulebook created after World War II and "a major challenge for the central values of democracy", according to Italy's premier Mario Draghi.
"Russia's invasion of Ukraine represents a major challenge for the central values of democracy," Draghi told US House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi during a visit to Washington on Wednesday.
"At stake is not just Ukraine's territorial integrity, its sovereignty and independence. This is an attack on the international system based on rules that we established after the Second World War," Draghi told Pelosi and Congressional political leaders.
Italy is giving military support to Ukraine as its president Volodymyr Zelensky has requested, Draghi recalled.
"This decision has received wide support from our Parliament. We back Ukraine's entry to the European Union," Draghi underlined.
Italy has earmarked 110 million euros of financial support for Ukraine, a further 200 million euros of loans, has taken in 110,000 refugees and set aside 800 million euros to maintain to help them, Draghi stated.
