'Full solidarity' with terror-hit nations says Mattarella

Italian president Sergio Mattarella on Tuesday voiced Italy's "full solidarity" with countries hit by recent terrorist attacks, including Germany, Turkey and Jordan.

"I express our full solidarity with friends affected by the latest Islamic terrorist attacks," Mattarella said.

"These stain peaceful daily life with blood in the most disparate places - a tourist site, an exhibition, a market," he said.

Mattarella was referring to the deadly attacks at the mediaeval castle of Karak in Jordan on Sunday and to the killing of the Russian ambassador to Turkey in Ankara and the deadly truck attack on a busy Christmas market in Berlin on Monday.

He expressed "great apprehension" for a young Italian woman missing since the Berlin attack as well as "anguish and sadness" at the incident and "condolences for the victims".

Prosecutors in Rome have opened a probe into the disappearance of 31-Fabrizia Di Lorenzo, whose mobile phone was found a the scene of the truck rampage at Berlin's Breitscheidplatzmarket.

Di Lorenzo failed to turn up at the German company where she worked in Berlin on Tuesday and social networkers have since being trying to trace her.

Twelve people were killed during the attack, but due to Germany's strict privacy laws, the identities of the victims have not yet been announced.

A manhunt is taking place to find the truck driver who is believed to be armed and who investigators said could cause "new damage" after police released a 23-year-old Pakistani suspect on Tuesday.
