IED targets Italian embassy vehicle in Afghan capital

A roadside bomb hit an Italian embassy armoured vehicle in Afghanistan's capital Kabul on Monday, lightly injuring one person, local outlet Tolo News reported.

“The vehicle that was targeted belongs to the Italian embassy and was carrying Afghan employees of the embassy. One person was slightly wounded in the blast,” Tolo News quoted a security source as saying.

An economy ministry vehicle which was passing at the time of the blast - around 7.30 am local time - was also damaged, the security source added.

No group including the Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, according to Tolo News. At least 177 people have been killed and 360 injured in suicide attacks, IEDs, ambushes and targeted assassinations in Kabul alone in little over three months, according to a Tolo News tally.

The Taliban have been accused of carrying out violent attacks across the country to boost their leverage in ongoing talks with the Afghan government in Qatar. The Islamic State jihadist group is also active in Afghanistan, however.

IS claimed responsibility for an armed assault on Kabul University in November in which 22 people died, including students and lecturers.
