Italian president to visit Rome refugee centre

Italy's president Sergio Mattarella will on Monday visit a refugee centre in Rome run by Jesuit priests and speak to residents there from Afghanistan, Somalia and Burkina Faso.

Mattarella's visit to the 'San Saba' centre coincides with World Refugee Day and comes at the invitation of the Centro Astalli, headed by Jesuit priest Camillo Ripamonti.

Ripamonti will welcome Mattarella and show him around the 'San Saba' centre which his currently home to 30 male asylum-seekers and refugees.

Mattarella this week told European Union leaders the current migration crisis affects the whole of Europe, not just entry-points like Italy, and could become "unmanageable" unless it is managed in a systematic way.

"We are faced with an epoch-making phenomenon that is long-term and which requires a wide-ranging, unanimous and co-ordinated response," Mattarella said Tuesday after meeting Romania's president Klaus Iohannis in Bucharest.

"It's a problem that concerns the whole of Europe not just the countries where migrants arrive, because if we do not govern this phenomenon, the migrant influx will steadily increase and risks becoming unmanageable."
