The Italian government is donating five million euros to war-torn Yemen to help feed its population, especially children, and give legal and medical assistance, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Italy this fully honours a pledge made at the Yemen pledging conference in Geneva on 26 February," said the statement.

With over 24 million people needing aid in Yemen, the Italian donation will go towards the distribution of basic food commodities, to fighting malnutrition among children and providing legal aid to rape victims, according to the statement.

The funds will also help ensure medical assistance and orthopaedic rehabilitation to the survivors of explosions and airstrikes through the supply of prosthetic limbs, said the statement.

The Italian funds, requested by deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re, with be channelled through Red Cross, United Nations World Food Programme and World Health Organization operations in Yemen, the statement said.

Yemen has been in the grip of a devastating war between the Saudi-Emirati backed government and Iran-aligned Shia Houthi fighters since 2014. The fighting has triggered what the UN describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with 3.3 million people displaced and 24.1 million - more than two-thirds of the population - in need of aid.
