Lawmakers question govt on Regeni case

A parliamentary committee probing Italian researcher Giulio Regeni's unsolved 2016 murder in Egypt was due on Wednesday to quiz the foreign ministry's director-general for Italian citizens abroad, Luigi Vignali, over the case.

Vignali's hearing is set to take place at 8.30 am at Palazzo San Macuto in Rome and will be live-streamed on the lower house of parliament's website, according to a press statement.

An Italian judge has ordered four senior members of Egypt's security services to go on trial in absentia on 14 October over their alleged role in Regeni's abduction in Cairo on 25 January 2016, and his torture and killing over the following nine days.

Egyptian authorities deny involvement in Regeni's killing and the case has strained relations between the two countries.
