Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi will visit Iran in April, he told journalists at the foreign press club in Rome in Monday.
"I will be in Teheran in April," Renzi stated.
Before the international sanctions imposed on Iran over its controversial nuclear programme, Italy was the country's biggest European trading partner, Iran's president Hassan Rouhani said during a visit last month.
Italy was the first European country Rouhani visited on his historic trip in late January aimed at rebuilding economic and political ties.
The first state visit to Europe by an Iranian leader for 16 years came after sanctions against Iran were lifted last month under a landmark deal it reached with world powers in July to scale back its nuclear activities.
Some 20 billion dollars of accords covering industries from natural gas to high-speed rail were signed at a ceremony in Rome on 25 January after talks between Renzi and Rouhani.
"Italian PM @matteorenzi will travel to Iran in the coming months to boost economic ties," Rouhani tweeted on 26 January after meeting Renzi.
