Italy was fifth in the Rio De Janeiro Olympics medals table Tuesday with eight golds, nine silvers and six bronzes after Elia Viviani won the men's track cycling omnium and Rachele Bruni came second in the women's 10 kilometre marathon.

Twenty-seven-year-old Viviani from Italy's northeast Veneto region was brought down by Britain's Mark Cavendish in a crash two thirds of the way through the race but managed to win gold. Cavendish won silver.

Bruni, a 26-year-old Tuscan took the silver medal in the 10 km open-water race after officials disqualified France's Aurelie Muller for grappling with Bruni close to the finish-line and dunking her head under the water.

Bruni dedicated her victory to the Italian army, her family and to her female partner, Diletta, "against all prejudice".
